Thermowells & Flanges

Protect your sensors. Improve service life.

Thermowells isolate the sensor from liquid, gas, slurry, pressure, and flow so the temperature element can be serviced or replaced without opening the process.

Material selection, bore profile, immersion length, and process connection all affect service life and measurement performance. Thermometrics supports design decisions around pressure, temperature, corrosion, and flow-induced vibration for more reliable installations.

Thermowell product family with threaded, stepped, tapered, flanged, and protection tube styles

Common Types

  • Threaded (NPT) for economical, field-serviceable installations
  • Flanged styles for pressure-rated, standardized process connections
  • Weld-in and socket-weld designs for robust permanent service
  • Van Stone and related service-friendly flange options

Detailed style options including threaded straight/tapered/stepped, lagging extension, large bore, socket weld, wrench flat, van stone, flanged straight/tapered, and protection tubes are shown in the product style cards below.

Standard Materials

  • Carbon Steel
  • 304, 310, 316 Stainless Steel
  • Monel
  • Brass
  • Inconel
  • Custom alloys and bores available for corrosive or high-temperature duty
  • Wake frequency and flow considerations reviewed for demanding process conditions
Threaded straight thermowell

Threaded Straight

Simple and robust geometry for common process conditions.

Typical for utility and process services where straightforward installation and service replacement access are priorities.

Threaded tapered thermowell

Threaded Tapered

Tapered stem profile to improve dynamic behavior under flow.

A tapered shank can help reduce wake frequency effects while maintaining a threaded process connection.

Threaded stepped thermowell

Threaded Stepped

Reduced tip mass for better response while maintaining connection integrity.

Used where faster thermal response is needed but stem strength and process sealing still have to meet installation requirements.

Lagging extension thermowell

Lagging Extension

Extended neck to clear insulation and cladding at the process wall.

Helps maintain access to connection hardware when vessels or piping are heavily insulated.

Large bore thermowell

Large Bore

Oversized internal bore to support larger sensor assemblies.

Selected for specialty insert sizes, thicker sheaths, or assemblies requiring added clearance.

Socket weld thermowell

Socket Weld

Permanent welded connection for high-integrity installations.

Common in demanding service where leak resistance and mechanical strength are prioritized over removability.

Wrench flat thermowell

Wrench Flat

Machined flats simplify installation and removal with standard tools.

Improves serviceability in tight access zones and helps control installation torque.

Van stone thermowell

Van Stone

Service-friendly floating flange style for easier alignment and maintenance.

Useful where flange rotation and replacement convenience improve field install efficiency.

Flanged straight thermowell

Flanged Straight

Straight stem with standardized bolted interface for process service.

A common pressure-rated choice where flange standards and repeatable maintenance access are required.

Flanged tapered thermowell

Flanged Tapered

Tapered stem with flanged mounting for pressure-rated, high-flow applications.

Combines bolted process connection standards with improved wake-frequency resistance in flowing media.

Protection tubes

Protection Tubes

Barrier tubes for harsh process exposure and sensor serviceability.

Used to isolate sensing elements from abrasion, chemical attack, and mechanical load while preserving replacement access.

Installation Guidance

The well should extend beyond the center of the fluid stream without touching the opposite wall. Installation in an elbow or tee may be necessary for sufficient immersion in small pipes.

Thermowells shield thermocouple and RTD elements against mechanical damage and corrosion. Many variations are available in a variety of materials to meet individual job specifications.

Design Benefits

  • Built from standardized components
  • Standard lengths for fewer spare parts on stock
  • Immersion lengths can be selected individually
  • Sensor can be replaced during operation
  • No welding seams in contact with media
  • Configured for RTD and thermocouple replacement convenience

Mechanical Options

  • Threaded wells for utility and general process service
  • Flanged wells for ANSI, DIN, and pressure-rated plant standards
  • Socket-weld and weld-in designs for permanent high-integrity installations
  • Protection tubes and specialty bores for corrosive, abrasive, or oversized insert applications

What We Help Specify

  • Stem profile and immersion length based on process geometry and response needs
  • Bore size and sensor fit for RTD or thermocouple replacement assemblies
  • Material choice around corrosion, temperature, and pressure exposure
  • Wake-frequency and flow considerations for high-velocity service

Process

Pressure, temperature, corrosion, and vibration drive design choices.

Immersion

Ensure adequate insertion length and avoid wall contact.
